We've decided that "work + life balance" is probably just a myth. Think of all the times you promised yourself (and maybe even your significant other) that you would leave the office early, only to once again get sucked into working late. This may be the ultimate let down - now you feel even worse and you're starving!
(Actual S/O's face ^)
So you head home, quietly eat ice cream by for dinner by yourself, slip into bed, rinse and repeat. This cycle of running ourselves ragged isn't doing anyone any favors. Late nights at the office may never be a thing of the past, but, we CAN be more proactive about taking better care of ourselves. A few simple tweaks here and there can have a massive impact on how we feel, while also keeping the mind sharp and ready to take on anything!
1. TURN OFF EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS
Instead, set an alarm on your phone, reminding you to check emails at various intervals throughout the day. Psychologists suggest setting a designated time to clear out your inbox. Try sticking to morning coffee break, coming back from, or heading to lunch, and once more during the afternoon coffee break. We can quickly became slaves to that little "ding", and often feel a sense of unnecessary urgency when it comes to checking the latest inbox arrival. Rest assured, for the most pressing matters, you can still be reached by phone!
2. FUEL UP ON HEALTHY SNACKS
Try plain greek yogurt mixed with your favorite granola, berries or even chocolate chips. Proteins, fiber and antioxidants keep the mind active and alert while helping you to beat the 3 o'clock slump. It can be difficult, especially if you work in an office like ours where little "snacks" seem to be calling your name from every corner of the room, and even harder if you have clients or vendors popping in with donuts. Rest assured, that sweet, sugary goodness is more foe than friend and by mid-afternoon you'll be painfully watching the clock.
3. SWAP COFFEE FOR HOT LEMON WATER
Lemon contains decent amount of Vitamin C which will act as a natural stimulant. It's also been proven to lower blood pressure and reduce stress while boosting your metabolism - bonus! So, even though you may not be dancing in your seat thanks to a short-lived caffeine high, you will still experience a jolt of energy sufficient enough to keep you on your toes. This boost to the metabolism keeps your body in forward motion, whereas the sweet indulgences of your favorite latte create more of a three steps forward, two steps back scenario.
Make it a point to incorporate these simple steps into your day at the office and see how much more you can accomplish. You might even be able to leave work early one day!
